Local Knowledge Goes a Long Way
Reading sits where several ground types meet. Thames Valley Gravel through the river corridors is free-draining but can become unstable below the water table, so excavations near the Kennet or Loddon may need pumping. London Clay from Earley through Wokingham is often waterlogged in winter and shrinks during dry summers. A rammer is usually the better choice than a plate compactor.
South-west towards Bracknell, Bagshot Formation sands are loose and trench walls collapse without sheeting. Towards Pangbourne and Henley, chalk limits excavation depth.
