Local Knowledge Goes a Long Way
South Downs chalk dominates much of the area. It is hard, often contains flint bands that wear bucket teeth, and can limit excavation depth, so a breaker may be needed where a standard bucket is not suitable. Along the coast from Shoreham through Southwick and Brighton, the ground changes to marine gravels, raised beach deposits and made ground, which can be variable and unpredictable.
Above Hove and Patcham, clay-with-flints overlies the chalk and becomes heavy, sticky and waterlogged in winter. Further north towards Burgess Hill and Hassocks, Weald Clay is the dominant ground type.
