Wacker plates are widely used for compacting granular materials beneath driveways, patios, paths, paving and other hard-landscaping and groundworks projects.

Coppard stocks lighter forward plates together with heavier reversible compactors for larger areas and more demanding applications. The right machine depends on the material, working area, required compacted depth and site access rather than simply choosing the heaviest plate available.

When Do You Need a Wacker Plate?

A wacker plate is particularly useful where granular material needs to be compacted before the finished surface is laid. Typical applications include driveway sub-bases, patios, paths, shed bases, paving preparation and suitable trench or groundworks reinstatement.

Vibratory plates are generally well suited to granular materials such as MOT Type 1, crushed aggregate and gravel, where vibration helps the particles settle and interlock. Cohesive soils such as clay behave differently and may be better suited to a rammer or another compaction method depending on the material and project specification.

The working area also matters. A lighter forward plate can be practical on smaller domestic and landscaping projects, while a heavier reversible machine can provide greater productivity and compaction capability across larger areas.

Call 01273 596 979 with the material, approximate area and required compacted depth and our Brighton team will help identify a suitable machine.

Our Wacker Plate Hire Range

Coppard’s current plate-compactor range covers straightforward residential work through to heavier commercial compaction requirements.

The standard single-direction compactor plate is suitable for many smaller paving, driveway and sub-base projects. Heavier reversible machines include the Bomag BPR 55/65D and Wacker Neuson DPU models, which can travel forwards and backwards without the complete machine being manually turned.

Rubber protection mats are also available for compatible machines where a suitable plate needs to pass over finished block paving without direct metal contact with the paving surface.

The current catalogue lists the standard compactor plate from £30 per day, with larger reversible machines priced separately. Prices exclude VAT and non-account customers add 10%.

Wacker Plate Hire in Brighton and West Sussex

Our Brighton depot in Southwick provides a convenient base for wacker plate hire across Brighton and the surrounding West Sussex area, with straightforward access to the A259 and A27.

Wacker plates are regularly hired for driveway preparation, patios, paving, drainage, extensions and general groundworks. The most suitable machine depends on the actual material, working area and access rather than applying one compaction method to an entire location or ground type.

From Southwick we regularly support customers in Brighton, Hove, Portslade, Shoreham-by-Sea and Worthing, as well as the wider surrounding area.

Same-day collection or fast delivery may be available subject to equipment and transport availability.

Call 01273 596 979 to check the machine you need and arrange collection or delivery.

Collecting and Using Your Wacker Plate

Before collection or delivery, tell our Brighton team what material you are compacting, the approximate area, required finished depth and any access restrictions. This allows the machine to be matched to the project before it leaves the depot.

Some compact forward plates may be suitable for customer collection in an appropriate van or other suitable vehicle, while heavier reversible compactors require more careful transport arrangements. Call before travelling so the weight and dimensions of the particular machine can be confirmed.

At handover, the controls and starting procedure for the machine supplied can be explained. The appropriate number of passes and thickness of each compacted layer depend on the material, machine and project specification rather than one fixed rule for every job.

If the project includes both granular and cohesive materials, tell our team when booking so a plate compactor and rammer can be considered together where appropriate.

Call 01273 596 979 if you need help matching the equipment to the job.

Frequently Asked Questions – Wacker Plate Hire in Brighton

Same as vibratory plate?

Yes. ‘Wacker plate’ is a commonly used trade term for a vibratory plate compactor, partly because Wacker Neuson is a well-known manufacturer of this type of equipment.

Both terms generally describe machines that use vibration through a flat base plate to compact suitable materials. Coppard stocks forward and reversible plate compactors from our Brighton depot.

Tell our Brighton team what material you are compacting and the size of the area and we can help identify a suitable machine.

A wacker plate is generally better suited to granular materials such as MOT Type 1, gravel and crushed aggregate than to cohesive soils such as clay.

Cohesive material responds differently to vibration, and a rammer or another compaction method may be more appropriate depending on the soil, moisture condition and project specification.

Tell our Brighton team what material you are working with rather than selecting the machine from the location alone and we can help identify appropriate equipment.

There is no single layer thickness that applies to every wacker plate, material and project.

The appropriate compacted layer depth depends on the machine specification, material type, moisture condition and required construction. A light forward plate and a heavy reversible compactor can have very different capabilities.

For deeper sub-bases, material should be placed and compacted in controlled layers appropriate to the machine and project specification rather than assuming a universal 150mm depth.

Tell our Brighton team which material you are using and the required finished depth and we can help identify a suitable machine.

A wacker plate is commonly used to compact suitable granular sub-base beneath driveways, patios and paths, helping create a firm and stable foundation before the finished surface is laid.

The appropriate plate depends on the material, area and construction specification. Where the finished block paving itself needs compacting, a compatible rubber protection mat may also be required for the selected machine.

GOV.UK’s guidance on permeable front-garden surfacing provides useful information about permeable construction and sub-base considerations for front gardens.

Tell Coppard’s Brighton team what you are building, the size of the area and the material being laid and we can help identify a suitable wacker plate for the job.
