Trench props are adjustable steel struts used horizontally as part of suitable trench-support systems. Coppard stocks No. 1, No. 2 and No. 3 trench props together with steel trench sheets from our Godstone depot.

Trench Prop Sizes and Rates

Coppard currently stocks three sizes of adjustable steel trench prop:

Trench Prop No. 1 – 0.47m closed to 0.69m open

Trench Prop No. 2 – 0.69m closed to 1.09m open

Trench Prop No. 3 – 1.02m closed to 1.68m open

All three sizes are currently listed at £3.00 per prop per week. Prices exclude VAT and non-account customers add 10%.

The prop size should not be selected from trench width alone. The complete support arrangement, including the type, number and position of the props, should follow the temporary-works requirements for the excavation.

Call 01883 743 322 with the specified prop sizes, quantities and hire period and our Godstone team can confirm availability.

When Do You Need Trench Props?

Trench props are used as part of temporary support systems where opposing trench sheets or other suitable support faces need horizontal bracing.

Whether an excavation requires this type of support cannot be determined from depth alone. Ground conditions, groundwater, excavation dimensions, nearby structures and services, traffic and other loads close to the excavation can all affect the support requirement.

The temporary-support arrangement should therefore be established for the actual excavation before work begins.

Where a temporary-works design, engineer or competent site team has specified the required trench props and sheets, call 01883 743 322 and our Godstone team can confirm current stock.

Trench Props and Sheets – Supporting Excavations

Trench sheets and props can form different parts of the same temporary excavation-support arrangement. The sheets provide support to the excavation face, while trench props can provide horizontal restraint between opposing supported faces where that arrangement has been specified.

Coppard supplies both types of equipment from our Godstone depot, which means specified sheets and props can be arranged through the same hire account.

The number of prop rows, their vertical position and the required spacing should follow the temporary-works design for the excavation. These requirements can vary according to ground conditions, excavation depth, sheet type and the loads acting on the support system.

Call 01883 743 322 once the required sheets, props and quantities have been established and our Godstone team can check availability.

Trench Prop Hire in Godstone and Surrey

Our Godstone depot supplies trench props and sheets for drainage, utility, sewer, foundation and other groundworks projects across Surrey.

The support requirements can vary substantially between sites, so equipment should be ordered against the project’s temporary-works requirements rather than assumptions about local soil or excavation depth.

From Godstone we regularly support projects in surrounding areas including Redhill, Reigate, Oxted, Caterham, Horley and Lingfield, as well as the wider Surrey area.

Trench props can be collected from Godstone or supplied alongside trench sheets and other plant where delivery is more practical.

Call 01883 743 322 with the specified equipment, quantities and hire period and we’ll confirm current availability and collection or delivery arrangements.

Why Hire Trench Props from Coppard?

Frequently Asked Questions – Trench Prop Hire in Godstone

How many trench props do I need per metre of trench?

There is no universal number of trench props that should be specified per metre of trench or per fixed amount of excavation depth.

The required number and position depend on the excavation dimensions, ground conditions, groundwater, sheet arrangement and loads acting on the temporary-support system.

HSE’s excavation guidance states that the temporary support required should be determined before excavation begins and that the necessary trench sheets, props and other equipment should be available before work starts.

The propping arrangement should therefore follow the temporary-works requirements for the particular excavation rather than the existing 1.2–1.5m rule.

Once the prop sizes and quantities have been established, call Coppard’s Godstone team on 01883 743 322 and we can confirm availability.

Coppard’s Trench Prop No. 3 has a published closed length of 1.02m and maximum open length of 1.68m.

That means the prop itself adjusts up to approximately 1,680mm, but this does not mean that every 1.68m-wide excavation can automatically use a No. 3 prop.

The complete temporary-support arrangement still needs to be suitable for the excavation, loads and support faces involved.

If the specified arrangement requires a wider strut or a different support system, call 01883 743 322 and our Godstone team can confirm what equipment Coppard currently has available.

Trench props are temporary-works equipment and should be installed in accordance with the support arrangement specified for the excavation and the relevant equipment instructions.

The correct position, number, orientation and loading of the props depend on the trench sheets or other support system, excavation geometry, ground conditions and loads involved.

For that reason, this page should not give one generic installation method such as simply extending a prop between opposing sheets.

The temporary-support system should be installed and checked by people competent to carry out the work in accordance with the project requirements.

Coppard’s Godstone team can supply the specified prop sizes and quantities and provide the relevant product information.

Trench props are horizontal struts intended to brace suitable opposing support faces as part of a temporary excavation-support system.

Coppard’s own product specification describes them as being used with trench sheeting, but other engineered excavation-support systems can use different panels, frames or strutting arrangements.

A trench prop should therefore not be treated as a freestanding support or used without a suitable support system designed for the excavation.

If your temporary-works design specifies Coppard trench props with trench sheets, both can be supplied from our Godstone depot.

Coppard currently lists Trench Prop No. 1, No. 2 and No. 3 at £3.00 per prop per week, with no daily rate published, so the current published hire period is weekly.

Prices exclude VAT and non-account customers add 10%.

Call 01883 743 322 to confirm current rates, stock and the required hire period before collection or delivery.

No. Although both are adjustable steel props, they are designed for different applications.

Coppard’s trench props are adjustable steel struts intended to be used horizontally as part of suitable excavation-support systems. Acrow props are normally used vertically for temporary support during building and structural-alteration work.

They should not be treated as interchangeable simply because they have a similar adjustable tubular construction.

If you need vertical building props rather than excavation struts, view the Acrow Prop Hire page or call our Godstone team on 01883 743 322.
