There is no universal number of trench props that should be specified per metre of trench or per fixed amount of excavation depth.

What is the maximum trench width the No. 3 prop covers?
Coppard’s Trench Prop No. 3 has a published closed length of 1.02m and maximum open length of 1.68m.
That means the prop itself adjusts up to approximately 1,680mm, but this does not mean that every 1.68m-wide excavation can automatically use a No. 3 prop.
The complete temporary-support arrangement still needs to be suitable for the excavation, loads and support faces involved.

How do I install a trench prop correctly?
Trench props are temporary-works equipment and should be installed in accordance with the support arrangement specified for the excavation and the relevant equipment instructions.
The correct position, number, orientation and loading of the props depend on the trench sheets or other support system, excavation geometry, ground conditions and loads involved.
For that reason, this page should not give one generic installation method such as simply extending a prop between opposing sheets.
The temporary-support system should be installed and checked by people competent to carry out the work in accordance with the project requirements.

Can I use trench props without trench sheets?
Trench props are horizontal struts intended to brace suitable opposing support faces as part of a temporary excavation-support system.
Coppard’s own product specification describes them as being used with trench sheeting, but other engineered excavation-support systems can use different panels, frames or strutting arrangements.
A trench prop should therefore not be treated as a freestanding support or used without a suitable support system designed for the excavation.
