Wacker Plate Hire in Crowborough, East Sussex
Need wacker plate hire in Crowborough? Coppard supplies petrol and diesel vibratory plates from our Crowborough depot for driveways, patios, sub-bases, footings and trench backfill. Call 01892 662 777 and tell us what you’re compacting and we’ll help you choose the right machine.
Wacker plates are ideal for compacting granular materials such as MOT Type 1, crushed concrete, gravel, sharp sand and other free-draining fills. Coppard stocks maintained petrol and diesel machines at our Crowborough depot for domestic, commercial and groundworks projects. Tell our team about the material, layer depth, working area and site access and we’ll help identify a suitable plate for the job.
What Is a Wacker Plate and When Do You Need One?
“Wacker plate” is the trade term — derived from the German manufacturer Wacker Neuson — that has become universal shorthand for a forward plate compactor or vibratory plate. The machine uses an engine-driven eccentric weight to generate rapid vibration through a steel base plate, which forces granular particles to rearrange and lock together, increasing density and load-bearing capacity.
Wacker plates are effective on granular materials: MOT Type 1, Type 3 sub-base, crushed concrete, gravel, sharp sand, pea gravel and similar free-draining fills. They are not effective on cohesive soils — clay and semi-cohesive fills require a rammer, which uses percussion rather than vibration. If your site has Weald Clay backfill in a trench, you need a rammer, not a wacker plate.
The most common applications for wacker plate hire are driveway and patio sub-base compaction, trench backfill in granular material, hardcore and sub-base under concrete slabs, and compaction of imported fill around drainage pipes in granular bedding.
Our Wacker Plate Hire Options
Coppard stocks petrol and diesel vibratory plate compactors at our Crowborough depot. Petrol plates are the practical choice for many driveway, patio, landscaping and trench-backfill projects, offering straightforward operation and easy transport between smaller sites.
Diesel plates are available for heavier-duty work and longer hire periods where increased operating time and sustained use are important. The right machine will depend on the material being compacted, layer depth, working area and the compaction performance required.
All machines are maintained and checked before hire, with daily and weekly hire available. If you are unsure which plate weight or centrifugal force you need, call 01892 662 777 and our Crowborough team will help you choose.

Wacker Plate Hire in Crowborough and East Sussex
Wacker plates are regularly hired for driveway preparation, paving, paths, drainage work and other projects where granular sub-base needs to be compacted properly. We stock multiple machines at our Crowborough depot so customers can collect directly or arrange delivery, subject to availability.
Ground conditions around Crowborough and the High Weald can vary considerably. Granular imported fill and Type 1 are well suited to vibratory plate compaction, while cohesive Weald Clay generally requires a rammer rather than a plate. Tell us what material you are working with before you hire and we’ll help make sure you take the correct equipment.
From our Crowborough depot we regularly support projects in surrounding areas including Tunbridge Wells, Uckfield, Heathfield, Wadhurst and Forest Row, as well as the wider East Sussex area.

Getting Compaction Right — What to Know Before You Hire
One of the most common compaction mistakes is trying to compact too much material in a single layer. A standard plate typically works most effectively when granular material is placed and compacted in controlled layers rather than laying the full sub-base depth at once.
For example, a deeper sub-base should normally be built up in stages, compacting each layer before adding the next. Work in overlapping passes so the plate covers the entire area consistently rather than moving randomly across the surface.
The material itself also matters. Vibratory plates work well on granular fills such as MOT Type 1, crushed concrete, gravel and sharp sand. Cohesive materials such as clay generally require impact compaction from a rammer instead.
If you are unsure about the machine or method, call 01892 662 777 and tell our Crowborough team what material you are compacting and the depth involved.

Frequently Asked Questions – Wacker Plate Hire in Crowborough
What is the difference between a wacker plate and a rammer?
A wacker plate uses vibration to compact granular materials — MOT sub-base, gravel, sharp sand and similar free-draining fills. A rammer uses percussion impact and is effective on cohesive soils such as clay. If you are compacting a trench backfill through Weald Clay, you need a rammer. If you are compacting a driveway sub-base or granular fill, a wacker plate is correct.
Can I use a wacker plate to settle finished block paving?
Yes. A suitable wacker plate can be used to settle finished block paving, although the correct machine and protective plate or mat will depend on the paving material and surface. Tell our Crowborough team what type of paving you are laying and the approximate area and we can help recommend a suitable machine. The Planning Portal also provides guidance on driveway construction and drainage.
How deep does a wacker plate compact in one pass?
The effective compaction depth per pass for a standard residential wacker plate is 100–150mm of granular material. For deeper sub-bases, compact in layers — place 100–150mm, compact, add the next layer. Attempting to compact a full 200mm+ depth in one pass leaves the lower material inadequately compacted.
Do you deliver wacker plates as well as offering collection?
