What Is a Vibratory Plate Compactor and When Do You Need One?
A vibratory plate compactor generates compaction force through a rotating eccentric mass driven by the engine. This creates rapid vertical vibration through the base plate, causing granular particles to settle and interlock — increasing the density and load-bearing capacity of the material being compacted.
Vibratory plates work on free-draining granular materials: MOT Type 1 and Type 3 sub-base, crushed concrete, gravel, sharp sand, pea gravel, block paving sand and similar fills. They are not suitable for cohesive soils such as clay — for trench backfill through Weald Clay or semi-cohesive material, a rammer is required.
