Choosing the Right Roller -- Application Guide

The right roller depends on the material being compacted, the required compaction depth, the surface condition required at completion, and the width and access constraints of the work area.

Roller Hire for Road Surfacing and Highway Maintenance in East Sussex

East Sussex Highways and private highway maintenance contractors operating in the region use rollers regularly for planned resurfacing programmes, pothole patch compaction and estate road maintenance. The Hamm 130cm and 140cm ride-on rollers are the machines of choice for these contracts — they produce the compaction density required by most highway surfacing specifications and cover ground at a rate that keeps large gang-size jobs on programme.

For smaller highway maintenance work — individual pothole patches, footway resurfacing, private access road overlays — a pedestrian twin drum or the HD80 ride-on is sufficient. These machines can be transported on a standard plant trailer and are practical for one or two operative teams without a full surfacing gang.

Private road resurfacing on rural lanes, estate drives and farm access tracks across the Crowborough, Uckfield, Forest Row and Heathfield areas is a consistent source of roller demand. The combination of older road construction, heavy agricultural traffic and the freeze-thaw cycles that affect chalk and clay subgrades means private road maintenance is a regular requirement across the High Weald.

For any resurfacing work on public highways, check requirements with East Sussex Highways or Kent Highways. Works on public roads typically require a Section 50 licence or NRSWA permit depending on the scope and whether the carriageway is being opened.

We regularly supply roller hire to customers across Tunbridge Wells, Uckfield, East Grinstead, Heathfield, Wadhurst, Forest Row and Tonbridge. Same-week delivery available from our Crowborough depot across East Sussex and Kent.

Roller Hire for Groundworks and Drainage Contractors in Kent and Surrey

Groundworks and drainage contractors operating across Kent and Surrey use the Wacker RTSC3 trench roller regularly for trench backfill compaction on drainage replacement, water main installation and utility works. The remote-controlled operation is a key safety benefit — no operative needs to work inside the trench during compaction, which significantly reduces the risk associated with confined space working.

For new construction sites where sub-base layers are being installed across larger areas — foundation formation, ground bearing slab preparation, drainage blanket layers — the ride-on rollers (HD80, 100cm twin drum or wider) are used alongside plate compactors to complete the compaction sequence. Rollers handle the main area; plate compactors address edges, obstructions and tight corners where the roller cannot reach.

Contractors across East Sussex and Kent collect from our Crowborough depot. Call 01892 662 777 to confirm which roller models are available before scheduling collection.

If you are operating under a compaction specification that requires a particular machine weight, drum width or centrifugal force rating, give us the specification when you call. We can confirm which machines in the fleet meet the requirement and advise on the best option.

Frequently Asked Questions โ€” Roller Hire in Crowborough and East Sussex

What is the difference between a combination roller and a twin drum roller?

A twin drum roller has two smooth steel drums — one at each end — both of which can vibrate. It is the standard machine for asphalt breakdown and intermediate compaction passes. A combination roller has a steel drum at the front and pneumatic (rubber) tyres at the rear. The steel drum provides the initial breakdown compaction; the pneumatic tyres provide kneading compaction that closes the surface and produces the dense, smooth texture required on wearing course asphalt.

Yes. A vibratory twin drum or single drum pedestrian roller is effective for compacting Type 1, gravel and compacted hardcore on residential driveways. The pedestrian RD7 or MBR71 will access most standard driveways through a single gate and produce consistent compaction across the width of the drive. For a large driveway, the HD80 ride-on will be more efficient.

A pedestrian roller is usually suitable for driveways, paths,ย trenchesย and other restricted areas, while a larger ride-on roller is more efficient for roads, car parks and wider areas of sub-base or asphalt. The right choice also depends on the material being compacted, the depth of each layer and the finishย required. Skills Englandโ€™s guidance on theโ€ฏroad surfacing operative roleโ€ฏexplains how compacting rollers are used as part of preparing and finishing road surfaces. Tell Coppardโ€™s Crowborough team what you are compacting, the approximate area and any access restrictions, and they can recommend the most suitable roller for the job.ย

The Wacker Neuson RTSC3 is a compaction roller specifically designed for use inside trenches. The operator controls it remotely from the surface using a radio handset, so no one needs to be inside the trench during compaction. It works in layers as the trench is backfilled — lower in sections, compact each lift, raise the machine and add the next lift. It produces better compaction of trench backfill than a plate compactor, particularly at depth, and removes the risk of a person working in a confined excavation.

For residential and private road resurfacing with a single roller, a 100cm to 120cm twin drum ride-on is the practical minimum that produces consistent coverage across a standard single-track lane width. For two-lane roads or commercial car parks, the 130cm or 140cm Hamm rollers complete the breakdown and intermediate passes efficiently. For large-area jobs, the pneumatic Hamm GRW 280i adds the finishing kneading passes across the full width.

Vibratory compaction close to structures carries a risk of causing settlement, cracking or damage to the structure or to buried services and drainage. Industry guidance (BRE Digest 353) specifies minimum safe working distances from structures depending on machine weight and vibration frequency. As a general precaution, turn vibration off and use static passes within 1 to 2 metres of any wall, foundation or buried service. If in doubt, use a plate compactor at low force near the structure and keep the roller to the main area.
