Laying sub-base, backfilling a trench, compacting block paving or preparing a slab formation — a plate compactor is the essential last step before any hard surface is finished. It densifies the material below, preventing settlement and premature surface failure. Four plate compactor sizes from 30 per day, plus rubber protection mats for block paving and sensitive surfaces.

Plate Compactor Hire Fleet -- Sizes, Types and Rates

We stock four plate compactors covering sub-base preparation, trench backfill, paving compaction and large-area site preparation. A reversible plate travels forward and backward without turning — critical for trench work and confined-space compaction.

Choosing the Right Plate Compactor

The correct plate compactor depends on the material you are compacting, the depth of each compaction lift, and whether you need to travel in reverse during the work.

Plate Compactor Hire for Groundworks and Driveways in East Sussex

Driveway replacement and new driveway construction is one of the most common residential groundworks jobs across East Sussex and Kent. The sequence is predictable: existing surface lifted, formation levelled, Type 1 sub-base laid in lifts and compacted, then tarmac, block paving or resin applied on top. The plate compactor is essential at the sub-base stage.

On the Wealden Clay that underlies most of the Crowborough, Uckfield and Heathfield area, sub-base depth matters more than in some other soil types. Clay can swell, shrink and move seasonally in a way that undermines inadequately compacted sub-bases. Most driveway contractors in this area work to a minimum 150mm compacted Type 1 sub-base, applied in two 75mm lifts with a reversible plate compactor on each lift.

For patio and garden terrace projects, smaller sub-base depths are common but the principle is the same — a compacted, stable base prevents slabs from settling unevenly after installation. The standard plate compactor is adequate for most patio sub-base work; the reversible plate is preferred if any edging or restricted-access work is involved.

Drainage trench backfill compaction is a specialist application. Water main, gas, electric and drainage trenches all need compacted backfill to prevent settlement of the surface above. In highways and footways, the specification for trench reinstatement under NRSWA is specific about compaction layer thickness and equipment type — always check the specification against the equipment you plan to use.

We regularly supply plate compactor hire to customers across Tunbridge Wells, Uckfield, East Grinstead, Heathfield, Wadhurst, Forest Row and Tonbridge. Same-week delivery available from our Crowborough depot across East Sussex and Kent.

Plate Compactor Hire for Builders and Groundworks Contractors in Kent and Surrey

Building contractors, groundworks companies and surfacing specialists across Kent and Surrey regularly hire plate compactors on a per-job basis. Purchasing a plate compactor represents a capital outlay and ongoing maintenance commitment that many contractors prefer to avoid — hiring means you get the right machine for each job without owning the full range.

For contractors working across a wide geography — from the Sevenoaks and Tonbridge area of Kent through to Surrey and back into East Sussex — collecting from Coppard’s Crowborough depot. Call 01892 662 777 to confirm which models are in stock before scheduling collection.

For block paving specialists, the Wacker DPU 4045Ye with rubber mats is the combination of choice for final surface compaction on large drives and parking areas. The wide plate covers ground quickly, and the rubber mats protect the block faces from damage during the final compaction passes.

If your compaction specification requires proof of compaction — a falling weight deflectometer reading or plate bearing test result — discuss this with your engineer before booking equipment. The standard plate compactor and reversible Bomag are appropriate for most residential and light commercial applications; the Wacker DPU 100 is the option when higher specified compaction is required.

Frequently Asked Questions — Plate Compactor Hire in Crowborough and East Sussex

What is the difference between a forward-only and a reversible plate compactor?

A forward-only plate compactor travels in one direction — forward. To compact a different area, you lift and reposition the machine. A reversible plate can travel both forward and backward at the push of a lever, allowing you to compact in passes without turning the machine. Reversible plates are essential in trenches and corners where turning is not possible, and more efficient on long straight runs because you can work back without repositioning.

A standard forward plate is effective on granular material in layers up to 75mm compacted depth. A heavy reversible plate (Bomag BPR or Wacker DPU 4045Ye) can compact layers up to 150mm in granular material. The Wacker DPU 100 is rated for deeper lifts in heavy-duty applications. Always compact in layers rather than trying to compact deep fills in a single pass — deep single-pass compaction leaves inadequately compacted material in the middle of the lift.

Plate compactors are most effective on granular material (Type 1, gravel, crushed concrete, sharp sand). Clay is cohesive — it tends to shear under vibratory compaction rather than densify in the way granular material does. For clay subgrades, a smooth drum roller or sheepsfoot roller is more effective. If you need to compact cohesive backfill in a trench, the Wacker DPU 100 gives the best result available from a plate compactor, but manage expectations on the compaction density achievable in heavy clay.

A lighter forward-moving plate is generally suitable for patios, paths, paving and smaller areas of granular sub-base, while a heavier reversible plate is usually more effective for deeper layers and larger groundwork projects. The right machine will depend on the material, compacted layer depth, working area and access available. Skills England identifies compactor plates as standard equipment used by groundworkers when constructing roads, pathways and hard-landscaping areas, with more information available through its groundworker occupational guide. Tell Coppard’s Crowborough team what you are building, the material being compacted and the size of the area, and they can recommend a plate capable of producing a firm, even base without leaving you with an underpowered machine.

Yes, but with care. Vibratory compaction within close proximity of existing walls, foundations, retaining structures or buried services creates a risk of damage or settlement. Industry guidance (BRE and CIRIA) specifies minimum distances from structures at which vibratory equipment can be used, based on the machine’s centrifugal force and the structural sensitivity. If you are compacting within 1 to 2 metres of a structure, check the guidance or consult your engineer before using any vibratory equipment.

Two to four passes are typical for well-graded Type 1 sub-base in 75-100mm lifts with a standard or reversible plate. The precise number depends on the material gradation, moisture content and the compactor’s centrifugal force. The practical check: run two more passes and see whether the plate is still sinking into the material. When the surface feels firm and the plate skims across without sinking, you have achieved adequate compaction for most residential applications.
