A grader puts a level finish on ground that a dumper and excavator cannot achieve alone.
Mini graders are the machine between a tracked excavator and a full motor grader — compact enough to work on access tracks, private roads and smaller groundworks sites, but capable enough to grade, cut and spread material to a level finish. Coppard has two mini graders available from Crowborough: the MBU 93 and the PSI M413Xt 4×4.
Both machines are hired POA — the right rate depends on duration, site conditions and whether you need delivery and collection. Call the yard with the job details and we will confirm availability and price.
PSI M413Xt Mini Grader -- 4x4 with Front Bucket and Rear Rippers
The PSI M413Xt is a 4-wheel drive mini grader fitted with a front bucket and rear rippers as standard. The four-wheel drive gives traction on softer ground and steeper gradients where a 2WD machine would struggle.
The rear rippers are what set this machine apart for tougher jobs. If you are regrading a surface that has been compacted or part-surfaced, the rippers break it up first. The blade then grades the loosened material to the profile you need. One machine doing two operations saves time and reduces the number of passes required.
For access track construction across East Sussex, where ground conditions change quickly from firm chalk to soft clay, the 4x4 drive keeps the machine working when a 2WD unit would lose traction.
Pricing POA — call 01892 662 777 with job details.
MBU 93 Mini Grader -- 4x2 Two-Wheel Drive
The MBU 93 is a 2-wheel drive rear-drive mini grader suited to sites with firm ground conditions and reasonable gradients. Lighter and more manoeuvrable than the PSI, it is the right choice when 4×4 traction is not needed.
The MBU 93 works well on established farm tracks and access roads where the main job is regular maintenance grading rather than initial construction. If the ground is firm and reasonably level, the 2WD machine is sufficient and often easier to operate in confined spaces.
Not sure whether you need the 2WD or 4WD machine? Tell us the site conditions — gradient, ground type, whether there is existing surfacing — and we will advise. Pricing POA.

What Mini Graders Are Used For
Mini graders fill a specific gap in the plant hire range. Bigger than a blade on a dumper, smaller than a full motor grader. The jobs they suit best are those where you need a consistent, controlled level finish across a surface that a tracked excavator alone cannot produce.
A grader is most effective when used in combination with a dumper supplying material and a roller for compaction. If you are building a track from scratch, call the yard — we can put together a full package of grader, dumper and roller with or without operators.
We regularly supply grader hire to customers across Tunbridge Wells, Uckfield, East Grinstead, Heathfield, Wadhurst, Forest Row and Tonbridge. Same-week delivery available from our Crowborough depot across East Sussex and Kent.
Grader Hire in the High Weald -- What the Ground Demands
East Sussex groundworks regularly expose the difference between machines. Wealden clay sits under much of the area between Crowborough and the coast. It behaves differently to chalk or sandy soil — it cuts differently, it moves differently and it compacts differently.
On a clay site, grading is most effective when the material is at the right moisture content — not too wet to stick to the blade, not too dry to bind. Timing grading work in relation to weather is something the yard team can advise on based on the time of year and the site.
For access tracks on clay subsoil, a geotextile membrane under a graded granular layer prevents the clay pumping up through the stone over time. Grading in the granular layer on top is the final operation — and this is where the mini grader earns its place.
For steeper sites in the High Weald, the PSI M413Xt 4×4 is the right choice. The additional traction keeps the machine stable on gradients that would cause a 2WD grader to lose traction or slide. Call the yard and describe the gradient and ground conditions — we will advise which machine suits.

Frequently Asked Questions — Grader Hire in Crowborough and East Sussex
What is the difference between the MBU 93 and PSI M413Xt graders?
The MBU 93 is 2-wheel drive (rear), suited to firm, stable ground. The PSI M413Xt is 4-wheel drive with a front bucket and rear rippers — it handles softer ground, steeper gradients and harder surfaces that need breaking up before grading. For most access track and road maintenance jobs on reasonable ground, the MBU 93 is sufficient. For tougher conditions or where ripping is needed, the PSI is the right choice.
Do I need an operator or can I self-drive the grader?
Mini graders can be hired on a self-drive basis if you have the experience to operate them safely. If you are not familiar with grader operation, we strongly recommend discussing an operated hire. Getting the blade angle, crossfall and passes wrong wastes time and material. Call the yard and we will advise based on your experience and the job.
Can you deliver a grader to sites across East Sussex?
Yes. We deliver both graders across Crowborough, Tunbridge Wells, Uckfield, Heathfield, East Grinstead and the surrounding area. Mini graders travel on a low loader. Give us the site address and access details — including any weight restrictions or low bridges on the delivery route — when you call.
Can I hire a grader with a dumper and roller as a package?
Yes. We can supply a grader, dumper and roller together for access track and road construction projects. This is a common combination for track-building jobs — the dumper brings the material, the grader shapes it, the roller compacts it. Call the yard with the job scope and we will put together a package quote.
How far in advance do I need to book a grader?
Graders are specialist machines and availability can be limited at busy periods. We recommend booking at least a week in advance where possible. For urgent requirements, call the yard directly and we will confirm what we can do. Trade account holders get priority booking.
