For a typical 900–1000mm door opening in a brick inner leaf, two props — one either side, set back 150–300mm from the cut — is the standard arrangement. Wider openings or heavy loads above may need three props. Your structural engineer or building control surveyor should specify the propping scheme for any notifiable alteration.
What size acrow prop do I need?
Measure the height from floor to soffit and select a prop that extends comfortably within that range. Our No. 1 (to 3.12m) covers most standard single-storey rooms. For ceilings above 2.7m, move to the No. 2 (3.35m). The No. 4 (4.87m) is for barn conversions and large-volume spaces. If between sizes, always go up.
Can acrow props be used on timber floors?
Yes, with care. Position a sole plate under the prop base spanning at least two joists, and a head plate at the top to distribute the load. For heavy loads — a substantial steel beam above — a structural engineer should confirm the floor can take the temporary prop loading.
What is the minimum hire period?
One week at £3.00 per prop per week. Most lintel and small beam jobs complete within a week. If your job runs longer, you simply continue the hire week by week at the same rate.
