Acrow Prop Hire — Sizes and Rates

Acrow props are adjustable steel columns with a screw-threaded extension and load-bearing plate at each end, set to the required height to carry the load above while the structural element below is removed or replaced.

When Do You Need Acrow Props?

Acrow props are required for any structural alteration involving a load-bearing element — CDM regulations and building control requirements mean the masonry above must be supported before any structural element is removed.

If you are unsure how many props or which sizes you need, describe the job to our Crowborough team on 01892 662 777 and we will advise.

Acrow Props for Structural Work on High Weald Properties

East Sussex and the High Weald area has a high proportion of older housing stock — Victorian terraces, Edwardian semis, converted oast houses and timber-frame properties that frequently require structural alterations as owners extend, open-plan or convert.

Older lintels in properties across Crowborough, Uckfield and Heathfield are commonly timber or rough stone — replacing these with modern steel lintels is one of the most common jobs our props support. Barn conversions prevalent across the area between Crowborough and the Kent border typically require No. 4 props for their tall clearances.

We regularly supply acrow prop hire to customers across Tunbridge Wells, Uckfield, East Grinstead, Heathfield, Wadhurst, Forest Row and Tonbridge. Same-week delivery available from our Crowborough depot across East Sussex and Kent.

Using Acrow Props Correctly

Acrow props are simple to use but must be set up correctly to be safe. Always place a timber sole plate under the bottom plate on any surface that is not solid concrete, and a head plate between the prop top and the soffit.

Frequently Asked Questions — Acrow Prop Hire in Crowborough and East Sussex

How many acrow props do I need for a standard door opening?

For a typical 900–1000mm door opening in a brick inner leaf, two props — one either side, set back 150–300mm from the cut — is the standard arrangement. Wider openings or heavy loads above may need three props. Your structural engineer or building control surveyor should specify the propping scheme for any notifiable alteration.

Measure the height from floor to soffit and select a prop that extends comfortably within that range. Our No. 1 (to 3.12m) covers most standard single-storey rooms. For ceilings above 2.7m, move to the No. 2 (3.35m). The No. 4 (4.87m) is for barn conversions and large-volume spaces. If between sizes, always go up.

Yes, with care. Position a sole plate under the prop base spanning at least two joists, and a head plate at the top to distribute the load. For heavy loads — a substantial steel beam above — a structural engineer should confirm the floor can take the temporary prop loading.

One week at £3.00 per prop per week. Most lintel and small beam jobs complete within a week. If your job runs longer, you simply continue the hire week by week at the same rate.
