A wacker plate is the standard compaction tool for granular materials — sub-base, gravel, MOT Type 1 and aggregate. If you are searching for wacker plate hire near me in Surrey, our Godstone depot stocks petrol and diesel plates by the day or week, properly maintained and ready to use. Collection or delivery across Surrey and Kent. Call 01883 743 322.

Wacker Plates Available to Hire

We stock petrol and diesel wacker plates at our Godstone depot. All machines are serviced between every hire — fuel fresh, oil checked, base plate inspected and ready to start first pull. A properly maintained wacker plate delivers consistent compaction force across the job. A neglected one stalls, misfires and wastes your day.

Petrol plates are the standard choice for residential applications: driveway sub-bases, patio preparation, footing compaction and trench backfill in granular material. They are straightforward to start, simple to operate and compact enough for a van or large estate car. Diesel plates are available for longer-duration hire and heavier-duty commercial compaction work.

Rubber sole plate attachments are available for compacting finished block paving surfaces without marking or chipping the block faces. Ask for the sole plate when you book if you need it for a paving application.

Full specifications and current availability for our complete wacker plate range are listed in the Coppard online catalogue.

Choosing the Right Wacker Plate

The most common mistake is placing the full depth of sub-base in one go and running the plate over it once. The surface looks firm but the bottom 100mm has not been compacted. The correct method is to place 100 to 150mm of granular material, compact in overlapping passes, then add the next layer and compact again. Repeat until you reach formation level.

Wacker plates compact granular materials: MOT Type 1 and Type 3, crushed concrete, gravel, sharp sand and similar free-draining fills. They do not compact cohesive soils. Weald Clay — which dominates south of the M25 around Redhill, Reigate and Godstone — does not respond to vibratory compaction. If your trench backfill is clay, you need a rammer.

What to Expect When You Hire a Wacker Plate from Coppard

All wacker plates leave our Godstone yard fuelled, serviced and checked. At collection we walk you through the controls, confirm the correct layering technique and explain how to use the rubber sole plate if you have one for block paving.

Work in overlapping parallel passes. Each pass should overlap the previous by roughly 100mm. Let the plate move at its own pace — pushing too fast reduces contact time and compaction quality. If the plate is still sinking after two or three passes, the layer is too deep or the material is too wet to compact effectively.

Frequently Asked Questions — Wacker Plate Hire

What is the difference between a wacker plate and a rammer?

A wacker plate uses vibration and works on granular materials: MOT sub-base, gravel, sharp sand and aggregate. A rammer uses impact and works on cohesive soils such as clay. Weald Clay is the dominant ground type south of the M25, so if you are compacting a trench backfill through clay around Redhill, Reigate or Godstone, you need a rammer. For granular sub-base or driveway preparation, a wacker plate is the right tool.

Yes. A wacker plate can be used to settle the finished block paving without marking or damaging the surface. The correct machine will depend on the size of the paved area, the materials used and the access available. The Planning Portal’s patio and driveway guidance also explains the importance of suitable drainage and permeable construction. Tell Coppard’s Godstone team what surface you are laying and the approximate area, and they can recommend a suitable wacker plate for the job.

A standard petrol wacker plate compacts 100 to 150mm of granular material per pass. For deeper sub-bases, compact in layers: place 100 to 150mm, compact, then add the next layer. Placing all the material at once and running the plate over it produces poor compaction in the lower layer — the surface looks firm but the base underneath has not been reached.

Yes, at both stages: compacting the sub-base before laying and bedding the blocks after. For the bedding stage, fit the rubber sole plate attachment to protect the block faces from chipping. Ask for the sole plate when you book if you need it for a paving application.

Most petrol wacker plates weigh 60 to 80kg with handles that fold for transport. They fit in a transit van or large estate car. Call 01883 743 322 before collecting to confirm the dimensions of the specific machine so you can plan your vehicle.
