Need a vibratory plate for compacting sub-base, aggregate or block paving? Vibratory plate compactors are the standard compaction tool for granular materials across construction and groundworks. Coppard stocks forward and reversible plates at our Crowborough depot, available by the day or week. From a domestic driveway to a commercial paving contract — the right plate for the job, ready for collection or delivery across East Sussex and Kent.

What Is a Vibratory Plate Compactor and When Do You Need One?

A vibratory plate compactor generates compaction force through a rotating eccentric mass driven by the engine. This creates rapid vertical vibration through the base plate, causing granular particles to settle and interlock — increasing the density and load-bearing capacity of the material being compacted.

Vibratory plates work on free-draining granular materials: MOT Type 1 and Type 3 sub-base, crushed concrete, gravel, sharp sand, pea gravel, block paving sand and similar fills. They are not suitable for cohesive soils such as clay — for trench backfill through Weald Clay or semi-cohesive material, a rammer is required.

Common applications include: compacting sub-base for driveways, paths and patios; bedding sand compaction for block paving and sett laying; trench backfill compaction in granular material; compacting imported fill under concrete slabs; and aggregate compaction on construction sites.

Forward Plates vs Reversible Plates — Which Do You Need?

Vibratory plates come in two main configurations: forward-only and reversible. A forward plate moves in one direction only. The operator lifts and repositions the machine to change direction. Forward plates are lighter, simpler and less expensive to hire — the right choice for most domestic applications including driveways, patios and garden groundworks.

A reversible plate can be driven forward and backward without lifting, which significantly increases productivity on larger areas and in confined spaces where repositioning is impractical. Reversible plates are heavier and generate higher compaction force, making them suitable for commercial paving, large sub-base areas and highway maintenance work.

Coppard stocks both configurations. If you are compacting a standard residential driveway, a forward plate will do the job efficiently. If you are covering a car park sub-base, large commercial paved area or working in a restricted corridor where manoeuvring is difficult, ask us about a reversible plate.

Vibratory Plate Hire Across East Sussex and the High Weald

Vibratory plates are among our most frequently hired items at the Crowborough depot. Driveway installations, patio sub-bases, path renovations and garden projects drive steady demand across East Sussex throughout the year, with peak periods in spring and early summer when outdoor groundworks are most active.

We serve customers collecting from Crowborough and deliver to sites across Tunbridge Wells, Tonbridge, Uckfield, Heathfield, Forest Row, Wadhurst and East Grinstead. Plates can be transported in a standard van. For delivery alongside other plant hire, the plate goes on the same account and lorry.

We regularly supply vibratory plate hire to customers across Tunbridge Wells, Uckfield, East Grinstead, Heathfield, Wadhurst, Forest Row and Tonbridge. Same-week delivery available from our Crowborough depot across East Sussex and Kent.

Using a Vibratory Plate for Block Paving — What to Know

Vibratory plates are used at two stages of block paving installation. First, to compact the sub-base and bedding sand before laying — essential for long-term stability and avoiding differential settlement after the job is complete. Second, to bed the blocks after laying, driving them into the sand bedding to achieve an even, locked surface.

For the second stage — bedding laid blocks — a rubber sole plate fitted to the base of the vibratory plate prevents chipping or cracking of block faces. Most of our vibratory plates are available with a rubber sole plate on request. Let us know when you book if you need the sole plate for a block paving application.

Why Hire a Vibratory Plate from Coppard?

Coppard has supplied compaction plant to contractors and domestic customers across East Sussex and Kent for 54 years. We stock both forward and reversible vibratory plates, properly maintained and ready for use. A well-maintained plate with correctly calibrated eccentric weight delivers the centrifugal force the manufacturer specifies — an undermaintained machine delivers less compaction without showing any external sign of the deficiency.

Frequently Asked Questions — Vibratory Plate Hire

What is the difference between a vibratory plate and a wacker plate?

They are the same type of machine. “Wacker plate” is a trade name — derived from the manufacturer Wacker Neuson — that has become generic shorthand for a forward vibratory plate compactor. “Vibratory plate” is the descriptive term covering both forward and reversible configurations. Both use eccentric vibration to compact granular materials.

For domestic driveways, patios and garden groundworks, a forward plate is the standard choice — it is lighter, easier to handle and sufficient for typical residential compaction requirements. For larger commercial areas, highway work or confined spaces where repositioning is difficult, a reversible plate increases productivity significantly. Call 01892 662 777 and tell us the job size and site type and we will recommend the right machine.

Yes, at both stages — compacting the sub-base before laying and bedding the blocks after laying. For the block-bedding stage, a rubber sole plate is fitted to the base to avoid chipping or cracking the block faces. Mention to our team when booking if you need the rubber sole plate for a block paving application.

Yes. A vibratory plate can be used to compact the granular sub-base before the blocks are laid and, with a suitable protective mat, to settle the finished paving without marking its surface. The required machine size will depend on the area, material depth and access available. The Planning Portal’s patio and driveway guidance also explains why suitable drainage and permeable materials should be considered when planning paved areas. Tell Coppard’s Crowborough team what surface you are laying and the approximate area, and they can recommend a suitable vibratory plate for the job.
