Laying a driveway, sub-base or compacting a trench backfill? A wacker plate — the trade name that has become the generic term for a vibratory plate compactor — is the standard compaction tool for granular materials: sub-base, gravel, MOT Type 1, sharp sand and aggregate. Coppard stocks petrol and diesel wacker plates at our Crowborough depot. Available by the day or week, for collection or delivery across East Sussex and Kent.

What Is a Wacker Plate and When Do You Need One?

“Wacker plate” is the trade term — derived from the German manufacturer Wacker Neuson — that has become universal shorthand for a forward plate compactor or vibratory plate. The machine uses an engine-driven eccentric weight to generate rapid vibration through a steel base plate, which forces granular particles to rearrange and lock together, increasing density and load-bearing capacity.

Wacker plates are effective on granular materials: MOT Type 1, Type 3 sub-base, crushed concrete, gravel, sharp sand, pea gravel and similar free-draining fills. They are not effective on cohesive soils — clay and semi-cohesive fills require a rammer, which uses percussion rather than vibration. If your site has Weald Clay backfill in a trench, you need a rammer, not a wacker plate.

The most common applications for wacker plate hire are driveway and patio sub-base compaction, trench backfill in granular material, hardcore and sub-base under concrete slabs, and compaction of imported fill around drainage pipes in granular bedding.

Our Wacker Plate Hire Options

Coppard stocks petrol and diesel vibratory plate compactors at our Crowborough depot. Petrol plates are the standard choice for most residential and light commercial applications — driveway sub-bases, patio preparation and trench backfill. They are straightforward to start, simple to operate and compact enough to be moved in a standard van or estate car with the rear seats down.

Diesel plates are available for longer-duration hire and heavier-duty compaction applications where fuel consumption and engine longevity over extended use are a consideration. For most day or week hires on domestic and small commercial projects, a petrol plate is the practical choice.

All machines are maintained and fuelled before hire. Hire is available by the day or week. If you are unsure of the right plate weight or centrifugal force for your application, call 01892 662 777 and we will advise based on your material type and layer depths.

Getting Compaction Right — What to Know Before You Hire

The most common mistake with a wacker plate is attempting to compact too deep a layer in one pass. The effective compaction depth of a standard residential plate is 100–150mm per pass. If you are laying a 200mm sub-base, that is two passes — lay 100mm, compact, lay the second 100mm, compact again. Placing all 200mm and running the plate over once produces poor compaction in the lower layer and apparent compaction only at the surface.

Work in overlapping parallel passes rather than random patterns. Each pass should overlap the previous by approximately 100mm. On large areas, divide the area into strips and work systematically. On driveways, work the edges first then the centre. Allow the plate to move at its own pace — pushing the machine too fast reduces contact time and compaction effectiveness.

Why Hire a Wacker Plate from Coppard?

Coppard has supplied compaction equipment to builders, groundworkers and domestic customers across East Sussex and Kent for 54 years. Our wacker plates are properly maintained — fuel fresh, oil checked, base plate inspected. A poorly maintained plate with a worn eccentric weight gives reduced compaction force without being obvious to the operator.

We are a CPA member and Constructionline-registered. Our Crowborough depot is open Monday to Friday 7:30am–5pm and Saturday 7:30am–12pm. Plates can be collected in a van and returned the same day. Call 01892 662 777 to check availability.

Frequently Asked Questions — Wacker Plate Hire

What is the difference between a wacker plate and a rammer?

A wacker plate uses vibration to compact granular materials — MOT sub-base, gravel, sharp sand and similar free-draining fills. A rammer uses percussion impact and is effective on cohesive soils such as clay. If you are compacting a trench backfill through Weald Clay, you need a rammer. If you are compacting a driveway sub-base or granular fill, a wacker plate is correct.

Yes. A wacker plate can be used to settle the finished block paving without marking or damaging the surface. The correct machine will depend on the size of the paved area, the materials used and the access available. The Planning Portal’s patio and driveway guidance also explains the importance of suitable drainage and permeable construction. Tell Coppard’s Godstone team what surface you are laying and the approximate area, and they can recommend a suitable wacker plate for the job.

The effective compaction depth per pass for a standard residential wacker plate is 100–150mm of granular material. For deeper sub-bases, compact in layers — place 100–150mm, compact, add the next layer. Attempting to compact a full 200mm+ depth in one pass leaves the lower material inadequately compacted.
